Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city and also the county seat of the state’s Minnehaha County. Nestled in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, Sioux Falls hugs the borders of three neighboring states: Minnesota (to the northeast), Iowa (to the southeast), and Nebraska (to the southwest). The city is located at the intersection of Interstates I-29 and I-90, and is also serviced by I-229 and South Dakota State Highway 42. Founded in the mid-19th century by land speculators attracted by the cascades of the Big Sioux River and the area’s beauty and water power, Sioux Falls became incorporated as a village in 1876 by the legislative assembly of the Dakota Territory. Restricted by its village charter, Sioux Falls subsequently petitioned to become a city and was granted its city charter in 1883. The arrival of the railroads in the 1880s ushered in an era of prosperity and an associated population boom. During the early part of the 20th century, the Sioux Falls economy centered on agriculturally-based industries, triggered by the opening of the John Morrell meat packing plant in the city in 1909. By the latter half of the century, the city’s economy had greatly diversified and become more service-based, focusing on finance, health care, and retail trade. Without insulin, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy.
People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin every day of their lives to replace the insulin the body cannot produce. They must test their blood glucose levels several times throughout the day.
The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1.
Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute which releases chemical substances in the blood. Without ongoing injections of insulin, the dangerous chemical substances will accumulate and can be life threatening if it is not treated. This is a condition call ketoacidosis. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the leading global organization funding T1D research. Millions of people around the world live with type 1 diabetes (T1D), a life-threatening autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults. There is no way to prevent it, and at present, no cure. JDRF works every day to change this by amassing grassroots support, deep scientific knowledge and strong industry and academic partnerships to fund research. The JDRF identity was created with these key considerations in mind. We have dropped the formal name “Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation” from our identity and will be known simply as JDRF. This better reflects our commitment to work for ALL those with T1D. Excluded from this sector are aerobic classes in Subsector 713, Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries and nonmedical diet and weight reducing centers in Subsector 812, Personal and Laundry Services. Although these can be viewed as health services, these services are not typically delivered by health practitioners. Sometimes its possible to divert money you would normally have to spend on other things towards charitable causes and still achieve your desired outcome. Instead of buying your morning cup of coffee, you are welcomed to donate those $5 to poor T1D children. $5 is not a big deal, but for poor kids, this is a hope for better future, without Type One Diabetes. So, instead of buying your $5 cup of coffee, use it to save poor children, affected by T1D. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure.
